Mario Steals Sonic’s Life in Super Mario Generations Mod

Mama-mia!

I just love looking at this.

I want to say it’s hard to pinpoint what it is, but it really isn’t. I loved Sonic Generations, and have admittedly wanted something similar for the likes of Mario for some time now. To that end, seeing a 3D model of Mario sporting his classic colors tickles my nostalgia bone, even if it is probably just a color-swap with the regular Mario model. And Mario in a city setting (something Sonic Generations has in spades) is something I wish we would see more of overall, stuff like Mario Kart notwithstanding; I loved it in Donkey Kong ’94, and wish that kind of thing would carry over into some regular “mainline” Mario titles.

The title bugs me slightly, though. Even with the two Marios and other tweaks (coins instead of rings, etc.), it still feels like Mario in Sonic’s world, so “Mario in Sonic Generations” is where I’d have gone with it. Sort of like “Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2” when you locked Sonic & Knuckles onto Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The animations are a bit funny, too. Seeing Mario roll around like that… it’s just crazy enough to work. Of course, when you bring in Luigi…

Luigi’s natural zaniness, even for Mario’s world, just works even better. It almost seems natural in a bizarre sort of way.

I don’t have Sonic Generations for PC, and even if I did, I don’t think it could handle this right now, as storage is at a premium and I really need to get an external drive to offload some of my files on to. Still, if I get the opportunity, I’d love to give this mod a try.

On a related note: the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog is coming up next year; I hope SEGA and Sonic Team have something as good as Sonic Generations to show for it.
