Here is a Sears commercial for the Super NES and Game Boy, believed to be from the Christmas of 1992 (though I think it may be 1991, given the lineup of titles shown):

Interesting that Super Mario World still has the “Super Mario Bros. 4” subtitle attached. If memory serves, they kept that in Japan, but with parents revolting at the idea of having spent hundreds of dollars on the original NES and then being “forced” to buy a new console (that didn’t play the old games), Nintendo removed the SMB4 part of the name to sort of establish World as its own entity.

I don’t think that really mattered to anyone in the end, though. It was Super Mario, and that was enough for us.
