Mega Man X Command Mission, part 2

I’ve only just started Chapter 4, but this game is providing more or less stuff I like out of Mega Man X right now. Foremost, it’s giving me a setting that’s NOT just “shoot everything.” It’s giving me character interaction with voices that are better than what we’ve been getting. And it’s giving me a story that doesn’t involve Sigma dropping the sky on our head.

Just a good ol’ fashioned Reploid rebellion, just like in the good ol’ days, before viruses and crap.

A few small things bother me, however. One is the lack of humans. So the humans were all kicked off the island by the Rebellion. I laugh at how convenient that is, considering we haven’t seen a living, breathing human in about 5 or 6 games, counting GBs(can’t remember for the first GB game).

Another is, while I really enjoy seeing how things are in the world of MMX, the fact that it seems to be a recently created city in the year 22XX(well after the current batch of other X games), it feels somewhat detached. It’s like, I’m seeing stuff, but don’t know how much is different from the “present” part of the timeline. So it sort of brings up the question of what are we actually seeing? Does this city reflect the cities and communities of 21XX?

Anyway, not too much bothers me here, because as far as I’m concerned and can tell, I seem to have a similar vibe to what they’re usually thinking on this stuff… and besides, 9 times out of 10, Capcom’s best games come at the number “2.”

I think this was just a low-key effort to test the waters, to see what reaction would be to a product like this. So they put in a moderate effort without running up a huge budget at Capcom HQ, and produce a decent game that many fans are eating up and is receiving a moderately decent score from most video gaming publications.

So maybe now is where they pull out the big guns. They put more effort into the big #2 and expand the scope, just as they did in Mega Man 2, Street Fighter 2, Resident Evil 2, Mega Man Legends 2, Mega Man Zero 2, Mega Man Battle Network 2, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Mega Man Xtreme 2, MM2 GB, and more.

Not that it’s ALWAYS a success. Mega Man X2 and Devil May Cry 2 spring to mind offhand as being more like cash-ins than real efforts. But two out of eleven isn’t really bad.

Unfortunately, this brings to me the question… when should the next one take place? While I’d like to see more of the “modern” MMX world, I do really like the characters I’ve met so far in CM, and X’s 22XX look. I’d really hate to see that go away.
