AEW Magazine for April 19, 2021

I usually try to break these up so that there aren’t just two of these in a row, but it’s kind of been one of those weeks. Hopefully tomorrow I can get another fire stoked on one of the other articles I’ve been working on here.

This week, I wanted to try something a little different. I’d been wanting to do something with an inset image for a while now (he says on only the fifth edition), and when I saw that image of Nick Jackson, I knew I had to do something. It was hard to resist doing a variation of the “Roll Safe” meme, and I’m still wondering if I should have gone for it anyway.

References abound this week, one pop culture, the other… I dunno, I guess just culture?

First up, we have the return of Kris Statlander to action after being out several months with a knee injury. Saying “Statlander returns” out loud, two thirds of her name rhyme with “Batman,” so I figured I’d do a play on “Batman Returns.” Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any clear pictures of a logo she might have, so I just made a quick, simple, slightly Batman-esque flying saucer. Or Saturn. Or a Pogo Ball. I guess there’s room for interpretation.

My wife didn’t recognize the reference when I showed her, and she knows the movie, so this one might have missed the mark by being a dated reference. If that’s the case, hoo-boy, wait’ll you see the next one…

When Sting lent Darby Allin his bat to use in the defence of the TNT Championship, another reference would come to mind: Casey at the Bat.

Anyone? Anyone at all?

It’s been over 130 years since that poem was published, so I’m not going to be surprised. Still, sometimes you’ve just gotta go for it, you know?
