Bionicle: Mask of Light

Ok, where to start…

Just saw the movie Bionicle: The Mask of Light, after having it run on a TV set off to the side in R-Zone for some time now. And really, it’s not bad. I recommend it to those who love Bionicle, computer animation, and/or Scott McNeil, who has three roles in it. Michael Dobson, aka Armada Starscream among others, has a role as one of the Toa as well…

Anyway, if you’re familiar with Bionicle, it’s good. If not, boning up on the mythology of it first might be beneficial. I believe the website has some bits on that, among other sources. For those blessed with DVD players, there’s actually quite a bit built into the DVD version, including a feature that explains various bits in text on-screen as the movie plays. Sorta like sub-titles, but not.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but let it be said, this IS made for kids, and generally speaking, grown-up fans shouldn’t bother bitching. Unlike TransFormers and MegaMan and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, this is a pretty new franchise that no one has grown up with yet– it’s still in the growing, so some things should be reasonably excused. But I get the feeling that in about 10-20 years, THIS will be on a nostalgia bandwagon alongside the rest above. Personally, I’m eager to see what it would be like then. But for now, I’m happy with what they’ve got. It’s high adventure, plain and simple, and doesn’t get too mature or philosophical.

All in all, it’s good fun.
